How Will You Know A Single Family Office When You Find One?

  • ABSTRACT: This paper provides an overview of single family offices (SFOs) that serve ultra-high net worth families. It summarizes the history, services, benefits, and growth of the SFO industry. SFOs emerged in the 19th century to manage the assets of wealthy families like the Morgans and Rockefellers. They offer customized investment management, tax strategies, estate planning, philanthropy coordination, and family governance for clients. SFOs align with the family's multi-generational vision and maintain strict privacy and avoid the conflicts of interest inherent in the financial industry. They provide objective advice tailored to the complex needs of the family across investments, business interests, and personal services. The paper outlines core services across investments, accounting, taxes, asset protection, and family governance. It argues SFOs can better coordinate fragmented advisor relationships and implement due diligence to meet a wealthy family's financial and non-financial goals. The paper makes a case for SFOs as a customized wealth management solution for ultra-high net worth families.
